President Adler Addresses Concerns About Serving Members in Embargoed Countries In January 2002 the IEEE informed members residing in several sanctioned countries that their IEEE benefits would be restricted due to U.S. Treasury Department trade regulations administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control. In response to numerous inquiries from members and others on this issue, 2003 President Michael Adler has written an open letter to members that will appear in the October issue of "IEEE Spectrum." Read an advance copy at 2. Conference Explores Ways to Teach Future EEs There's a lot to know when it comes to teaching college engineering students, and it isn't all subject based. The Frontiers in Education conference helps educators learn what it takes. Find out what that is at 3. Society No. 38: Product Safety Engineering Fifteen years in the organizing, the Product Safety Engineering Society is the IEEE's 38th and newest society. Learn more at 4. Blackout of 2003 Was Widely Anticipated IEEE Spectrum magazine has prepared a special report on the blackout that plagued the United States and Canada last month, and assembled background material that sheds light on it and points the way to solutions. Politicians and reporters on both sides of the border were pointing fingers even before power had been restored. However, three U.S. Department of Energy studies going back to 1998 forecasted major difficulties in the electric power system, making a massive U.S. power failure almost inevitable. The paper will show an improved method for measuring Total Cost of Ownership of data center and network room physical infrastructure and relating these costs to the overall IT infrastructure, including examples. ________________________________________________________ 5. New Journals Due Next Year Four new publications will roll off the presses in 2004, including a journal on geoscience, published quarterly, and another on automation sciences, coming out twice a year. Learn about these and the other new publications at 6. Online Courses Coming to IEEE Xplore Plans are under way for members and others with a technical bent to take short courses over the Internet through IEEE Xplore, the IEEE's repository of published information from its journals, transactions, and proceedings.
